Celebrate Nelson Mandela!

On June 2015, Quebec officially passed the act that February 11th of each year following will be officially proclaimed as Nelson Mandela Day in Quebec.

We invite you to celebrate this day remembering Mr. Mandela (he is often affectionately referred to by his Xhosa clan name - Madiba).

Nelson Mandela never wavered in his devotion to democracy, equality and learning. Despite terrible provocation, he never answered racism with racism. His life is an inspiration to all who are oppressed and deprived; and to all who are opposed to oppression and deprivation.

ART FOR SOCIAL CHANGE:
To mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day,
Elders Make Waves towards an Age Friendly City

Thursday, June 9, 2016
11:00 am to 3:00 pm

Lionel Groulx metro (at 11:00 am) and the Union United Church, 3007 Delisle Street (12:00 - 3:00 pm)

On Thursday June 9th, Montreal-based groups RECAA, Union United Church and Le Groupe Herencias/Encounters project will join forces with their partners to bring community awareness to the importance of an age friendly city in preventing elder abuse. Starting at 11 am, local groups, including mostly seniors, will meet at the Lionel Groulx metro and march to the Union United Church. Once at the church, lunch will be served. There will be speeches and more arts-based interventions. The purpose of the days activities is to engage the public with work that is being done by local groups to prevent elder abuse. Under the banner of Elders Make Waves towards an Age Friendly City, the groups have been focusing on issues of accessible transportation, social inclusion, and health and social services. This event is being held in anticipation of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), which happens annually on June 15th. Media and the public are invited to join.

Thank you for participating in the
Dr. Oliver Jones Golf Tournament

The 2nd Annual Dr. Oliver Jones Golf Tournament, which was held on August 14, 2015, was even more successful than the first. Thanks to the engagement and support of Gold Sponsor: Quadra Chemicals, Silver sponsors; Bark Busters, David Edey and Stephen Simmons, and all the participants including our volunteers.

We would like to thank Silver Star Mercedes for supplying a new Mercedes for the Hole in One competition. This was a great motivator. Unfortunately, no one won, despite some great attempts. Hopefully we will get a chance to try again next year! In addition, we are also grateful to our friends from Ferons Funeral Homes and Northern Technical Solutions, whose generosity contributed to the supply of prizes for our raffles.

We would also like to thank MNP, Kingston Byers and Ferons Funeral Homes for their hole sponsorship; Pharmaprix, Artistic Flair, Boucherie Notre-Dame, Justin Time Records, Heritage Montreal and The Barbados Tourist Authority for their donations to our event, and Diageos contribution to our dinner which made the evening an entertaining success.

We cannot thank our basketball players, Joel Anthony and Jamaal Malgoire enough for their signed jerseys, and Montreal Community Cares Foundation who donated Alouettes tickets and a team signed jersey for the silent auction, which raised $820.00.

Kudos to the Community Contact for highlighting and advertising the tournament, your support has helped us to share our vision with the community.

Congratulations to Greg Keene, Leo Knight and Bert Williams for coming in first place with the lowest score of 61.

Finally, we are gracious to Dr. Jones for his unfailing support to our tournament and the Union United Church. May God continue to bless and fortify him.

Despite the occasional precipitation, the tournament was well-attended. From the general consensus, it was a well-appreciated event. The proceeds from this event has brought Union United Church closer to the goal of our major renovation project, although we acknowledge there is still work to be done. We are already anticipating our third annual golf tournament and would appreciate your participation again. It would most assuredly guarantee another successful outing.

Blessings to all,
June Keene, Chairperson
Major Renovation Project
